Charles Atkins Perkinson, 78, passed away Feb. 5, 2010, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital after an extended illness.

Charles was born in Littleton, NC to the late Robert Thomas Perkinson and Bessie Lee Atkins. He is also preceded in death by his three brothers, Charles Elbert Perkinson and wife, Clara, Millard Lee Perkinson and wife, Jane, and James Earl Perkinson.

He is survived by Betty, his wife of 52 years; and his two daughters, Caren Perkinson Harvey and husband Kenneth and granddaughter Claire Betts of Lynchburg, VA and daughter, Lori Perkinson Vizi, and husband Nicholas and grandson Ethan Charles of Virginia Beach, VA; sister-in-law, Billie Perkinson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles is a graduate of Littleton High School, Littleton, NC and Presbyterian Jr. College, Maxton, NC. Charles served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in the Philippines and worked as a decoder in a highly classified position.

Upon completion of his service commitment, Charles received his BA and MA degrees from ECU in Greenville, NC.

While attending college he also worked in his brother's coal mining company in Bluefield, West Virginia. In 1958, Charles married his devoted wife, Betty Stocchi.

Charles began his teaching career in 1958 at Reynolds Elementary School in Richlands, VA. In 1960 Charles began his employment in Virginia Beach City Schools as a Social Studies teacher at the old Kempsville Jr. High School and also taught classes at Virginia Wesleyan College. In 1965 he was promoted to Administrative Assistant at Bayside High School. He later became principal at Virginia Beach Junior School and in 1969 opened the new Kempsville Jr. High School. He was transferred to various junior schools within Virginia Beach City Schools throughout his long career as principal.

Charles enjoyed spending his retirement time with his family. He enjoyed traveling, exercising at what he would refer to as the "Heart Attack Gym", and weekly breakfast outings with his buddies at The Breakers. He enjoyed going to the Virginia Beach Aquarium and his beach house with his family and grandchildren. He was a loving husband, dad and grandfather. He inspired his two daughters to pursue their education. Charles loved gardening in the yard, was an animal lover, and considered himself a connoisseur of North Carolina barbeque. He was a wonderful role model and will be missed by all.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the ICU staff at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
