A fine Christian woman, Elizabeth Susan Upton Propes, 94, of Norfolk, VA, entered the heavenly kingdom February 4, 2010.

She was born and raised in Alderson, WV. She had been a resident of Autumn Care of Norfolk since leaving the Lydia Roper Home in 2007. Prior to Assisted Living, she had lived in "Monkey Bottom", Willoughby since 1942, when she married the love of her life, John Wilson Propes. He predeceased her in 1981.

She became an early member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church where she will be remembered for her "Bake Sales" and her undying loyalty to the Methodist Women and the Fellowship Class. She considered her church family to be part of her own family.

She was known in Ocean View as a friend who would help you with problems or just listen and try to help. She befriended many Navy couples who were separated by service and became surrogate Moms for them. Many of them will mourn her loss, but will have many experiences with her to cherish.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Mamie Upton; and brothers, Fred, Orville, Glen, Haven, Melvin and Charles. Also predeceasing her were her sisters, Noka, Ruth, Lucille, and Rosalie.

She leaves behind her daughter, Libby Sue Propes Bishop and her son-in-law, Robert Eugene Bishop to mourn her loss. Known as Mammaw, she leaves her grandchildren, John Leighton Bishop and wife Samantha; her granddaughter, Kristin Elizabeth Haines and husband Matt to mourn her loss. Her great grandson, Marcus Allen Haines was a special light in her life. Her last Christmas was so special because of the family being together. Considering her their second Mom, she also leaves Doug McKeel and Sharon McKeel Shaw to mourn her passing. They were like her kids.

There will be a graveside service conducted by the Rev. Kathleen Monge on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. with a good old Pot Luck Lunch to follow at Miles Memorial Methodist Church. The family will provide the main courses and ask that side dishes be provided by her friends. Libby's Pot Luck Dinners were a legend at Miles for years, especially her meatloaf.

The family wishes to thank the Staffs of the Lydia Roper Home and Autumn Care of Norfolk for the professionalism and care of Libby and making her their friend.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in her honor be sent to Miles Memorial Church, 9450 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23503, where they will be used to update the building to the "Glory of God and the Salvation of Man." Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
