Richard Hamner Hawkes, 87, of the First Colonial Inn, Virginia Beach, VA, passed away January 31, 2010, in Virginia Beach, VA.

He was born October 3, 1922 in Nottoway County Virginia to the late Leslie Carlyle and Ruth Dews Hawkes. He graduated from Blackstone High School in 1939 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1943 with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry. He entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant immediately after graduation from V.P.I. He served in the 106th Infantry Division, 424th Regiment as a platoon commander and as company executive officer, and company commander in Europe. He was awarded a Silver Star decoration for gallantry in action during the Battle of the Bulge and also a Purple Heart.

He was employed by Mitchell and Smith Division of Sheller Globe Corporation in 1948 and worked for them and their successors, United Technologies, Inc. until retirement in 1987 as a Group Vice-President. For several years he was a member of the Wards Corner Lions Club and also served several years on the Budget Committee of the United Way. He was an avid boater, fisherman, and golfer and was a member and Past Commodore of the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club.

He was predeceased by two wives, Jeannine J. Schmidt Hawkes and Rachel Cooke Hawkes; and a daughter, Vivian A. Hawkes. He is survived by his children, Josette Hawkes Sills, Peggy Lynn Hawkes, William E. Hawkes, Michael L. Hawkes, and Robert A. Hawkes; two sisters, Maurine Hawkes Ryder and Agnes Hawkes Clay; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 12, 2010, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., (Bus. Hwy. 460), near Blackstone, VA 23824. Procession will continue to the Grace Methodist Church Cemetery, Wilsons, VA for burial and full military honors will be rendered. The family will gather following the services for visiting and refreshments in the Grace Church Fellowship Hall.
