Colonel (ret.) Edward L. Phillips of Virginia Beach, VA. Born 1930 in Richmond, VA passed away December 30, 2009.
He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Ann Phillips; and a son, Edward L. Phillips II. He is survived by his devoted sisters, Catherine Phillips Romaine and Loretta Phillips Small; and his sister-in-law, Joan Wharton Phillips.
He is survived by a large extended family that includes daughters, Catherine Phillips Outlaw, Theresa Phillips Foster, Susan Phillips Sarrett and her husband Davis T. Sarrett and Mary Anne Phillips Flannagan and her husband Mark R. Flannagan. He is also survived by sons, Stephen W. Phillips and his wife Gwen F. Phillips and Mark Wharton Phillips and his wife Nancy N. Phillips. He has fourteen grandchildren, Kevin B. Hardy, Timothy W. Garrett, Kellie H. Brekke, S. Paige Phillips, Kerry P. Flannagan, Pete Flannagan, M. Bryant Phillips, Amelia A. Phillips, E.L. "Trey" Phillips III, Victoria L. Merritt, Kathleen M. Johnson, David P. Sarrett, Jordan T. Sarrett, Jonathan Baird, and Hillary Foster. El was also survived by five great grandchildren, Aiden M. Hardy, Dillon M. Brekke, Nicolas J. Brekke, Ethan K. Brekke, and Kenley A. Garrett. He will be missed by devoted family friends Audrey and Al Kieschnick and Sabrina Genowski.
He grew up in Richmond, VA and attended Benedictine High School. He enlisted in the Army and attended Officer Candidate School in 1953. He had a long and distinguished military career achieving the rank of Colonel. He earned numerous awards for valor and service and served his country with honor. He participated in six campaigns in Korea and four campaigns in South Vietnam. During his 28 years of Commissioned service he served in Command of the 303rd Maint Bn, 79th Maintenance Bn, and as the Discom Commander of the 24th Infantry Division. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with V device and Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Viet Nam Armed Forces Honor Medal (1st Class), and the Republic of Viet Nam, Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. During his military career he remained a devoted and caring father to his extended family.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the Virginia Beach Hospice Program, specifically Linda, Maggie, and Dr. Patterson, with additional thanks to caregiver Joyce for all of their support and kindness.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel with Rev. Chris Fosback officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. also. Burial with full military honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 5, 2010. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
