Cdr. Paul L. Dennis, US Navy retired, 78, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2003, in a local hospital.

Born on a farm in Southwest Missouri, Paul answered his nation’s call in 1943, joining the United States Navy, where he saw service in the Pacific Theatre of Operations as a Flight Engineer and Tailgunner. After the war he spent three years in Honolulu only to again find himself in the thick of things in Germany as part of the 1948-1949 Berlin Airlift. While in Germany he met his bride and lifetime love of 53 years, Gisela Wilhelmina Jetzork, whom he married in July 1949. During his 30 year career, Commander Dennis also saw service in the 1956 Suez Crisis and the Vietnam War. Among the ships he served on were the USS Randolph, USS Antietam, and the USS Providence. A Mustang, Commander Dennis served four tours of duty in the Tidewater area during his distinguished career so it was no surprise that he chose to remain in Tidewater upon his retirement from the Navy in 1973. The Commander worked briefly for the First Virginia Bank of Tidewater after his retirement from the U.S. Navy, after which he spent 16 years as a Branch Manager and Assistant Vice President for the Bank of the Commonwealth. For several years, he was a member of the Optimist Club of Virginia and also served as its treasurer. Commander Dennis was a decorated war hero, loving father, devoted husband, and gentleman who will be mourned and missed by those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Gisela Dennis; two sons, Paul W. Dennis of Winter Springs, FL and Sean H. Dennis of Charleston, SC; a daughter, Donna Bendlin of Mukwanago, WI; and two sisters, Ruth Berry and Wilma Everett of Lebanan, MO.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation Inc., PO Box 613, Annapolis, MD 21404-0613, phone 1-800-747-2820 or www.aplastic.org.
