LCDR Paul D. “Dan” Clemens, USN (Ret), 69, of the 1400 block of Greeley Ct., passed away October 17, 2006, in his home.
A native of Seattle, Washington, Lieutenant Commander Dan Clemens enlisted in the Navy in 1958. After completing the Basic Course at the School of Music, he served as a trombonist in bands of the Sixth Fleet, Naval Air Station Norfolk, and as trombonist/violist in the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. Upon completion of the Bandmaster’s Course at the School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia, he toured South America as Assistant Leader of the Navy Show Band. Promoted to Warrant Officer Bandmaster in 1968, he served as Assistant Leader, Naval Academy Band; Director “Commodores”, “Sea Chanters,” Navy Band Washington; Director, Navy Band Orlando; Assistant Head, Navy Music Branch, Bureau of Naval Personnel; and Fleet Bandmaster, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He served as the School of Music’s seventh Commanding Officer from 1980 until 1984. He was a graduate of Highline High School in Seattle, WA. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies from George Washington University and a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management from Pepperdine University. After retiring from the Navy, he was the Artistic Director/Executive Director of the Huntsville, Alabama Symphony. He was an annual adjudicator of the Dixie Classic and also taught brass and string lessons to many local students.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy A. Clemens; a son, Daniel A. Clemens and wife Kimberly Ann of Chesapeake, VA; a daughter, Victoria Clemens Holman and husband Daniel of Palo Alto, CA; five grandchildren, Kylie Ann Clemens, Drew Daniel Clemens, Kiersten Nicole Clemens, Dylan Dakota Holman and Lindsay Ava Holman; and a sister, Helen Clemens Gehrke and husband Stephen of Seattle, WA.
A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. at Colonial Grove Memorial Park with Chaplain Roger Gauthier officiating. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
