Alberto Romen Asercion, 69, of the 2500 block of Admiral Drive, departed this life April 2, 2006, to be with our Lord. Mr. Asercion was a native of the Philippines, born in General Trias, Cavite, the son of the late Liborio and Filomena Romen Asercion. After studying with his grandfather Manuel Asercion, a Navy Bandmaster, he became the soloist of the famous BANDA MANTANDA. At the age of 15 he won the “Best Soloist” award in the Philippines. Alberto attended the University of the Philippines and later joined the United States Navy. He graduated first in his class and played lead Alto Saxophone with the Seventh Fleet Band that toured the Far East. He retired with the rank of Master Chief Musician (MUCM) after serving as the Conducting Instructor for the Armed Forces School of Music at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base and Concert Master/Associate Conductor of the U.S . Naval Academy Band in Annapolis, Maryland. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from St. Leo’s College followed by a Master’s Degree of Music from Norfolk State University, who awarded him the title of Eminent Scholar. After becoming the Conductor and Musical Director of The Virginia Beach Community Orchestra, now known as The Virginia Beach Symphony, he conducted numerous Broadway shows and operettas. He worked for the Selmer Music Company as a clinician and also taught master classes in conducting technique while working as a music consultant with various schools in Virginia Beach as well as in the Philippines (University of The Philippines and The University of Santo Thomas). As a conductor, clarinet soloist, clinician, and adjudicator, Maestro Asercion’s performances were legendary throughout his travels in the United States, Canada, and the Far East. In addition to being the Conductor of the Tidewater Winds, Alberto Asercion was a member of the Owens Lodge #164 AF & AM, the Knights of Columbus, General Trias Cavite Association of Tidewater, Philippine-American Vet. Assoc. of Tidewater, Cavite Assoc., PACT, Cultural Alliance, the Founder and Conductor of the Philippine-American Chamber Orchestra, the Founder and Artistic Director of the Philippine-American Chamber Youth Orchestra, an annual adjudicator of the Dixie Classic, as well as many other associations and organizations. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 46 years, Susana Loyola Caparas Asercion, his two sisters, Rosamena Asercion Javier, Flordeliza Asercion Garcia, his brother Dante Asercion, his two sons, Alex Caparas Asercion, Alfred Caparas Asercion, his god-daughter Maribel Romero, his two daughters-in-law Anne and Sarah, with his grandchildren Colin, Logan, Devyn, and Sydney, as well many other family members and friends. Alberto R. Asercion lived a blessed life and is now resounding heavenly music with the True Maestro, his Heavenly Father. The Mass of the Resurrection at The Church of the Holy Family will be Sunday, April 9, 2006, at 2 p.m. to be officiated by Father Leo Manalo, followed by the Inception at Princess Anne Memorial Park. Family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel from 5 p.m.to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a Wake service at 7 p.m. Saturday.
